[News] Neojaponisme - Tohoshinki rages against the machine

TohoShinki Rages Against the Machine

Johnny

TohoShinki (aka TVXQ!) are a popular Korean boy band and national heroes. An media executive working in Seoul tells me: “Korean internet users’ passion for TohoShinki is something similar in intensity to their belief that Dokdo is Korean land.” Now the group has crossed the Straight of Tsushima and taken over the Japanese music scene with the force of a Mongolian invasion. Their latest single 「どうして君を好きになってしまったんだろう?」 hit #1 on the Oricon chart a few weeks ago. Backed by the #1 record label Avex Trax and Korean music production powerhouse SM Entertainment, there is very little preventing TohoShinki from further dominating the Japanese music scene.

There is one area, however, that remains “off-limits”: TohoShinki are apparently blacklisted from TV Asahi’s long-running music show Music Station. According to a TohoShinki staff member’s blog, the band and their managers have been pushing the producers of Music Station extremely hard over the last few years to appear on the show. Now with three Oricon #1s in the bag — an extremely rare feat for a non-Japanese band — the excuses coming from Music Station are just not adding up.

Lest you see a sinister nationalist motive here, the blacklisting has nothing to do with Toho’s non-Japaneseness. Avex and SM also represent popular Korean female star BoA, who appears on Music Station and other Japanese TV shows regularly. There is only one reason why TohoShinki is not invited on Music Station: an intentional blockade from Johnny’s Jimusho, the production company behind Japan’s long-standing boy band monopoly.

Almost since the show’s inception in the late 1980s, Music Station has been the exclusive citadel of Johnny’s. Popular ’80s boy band Hikaru Genji appeared on the show almost every week. Johnny’s Jimusho’s other acts then rotated week by week, meaning that there were usually two Johnny’s act on every single show. This scheduling made some sense when Hikaru Genji was at the top of the pop charts. Around 1991, however, Johnny’s acts completely stopped charting on the Oricon. At this point, there was an almost “boy band hiatus” in Japanese pop culture: Hikaru Genji had peaked, SMAP had yet to take off, and most consumers rejected idol pop for “live house” rock bands. In spite of early ’90s consumers clearly signaling their disinterest in Johnny’s Jimusho acts, the company’s boy bands still appeared week after week on Music Station. The not-so-shocking conclusion: Japanese TV producers do not book talent based on their popularity as much as the TV station or producer’s organizational relationships with specific powerful talent companies.

This is still true 15 years later. Music Station is fiercely loyal to Johnny’s for unknown reasons and will generally ignore “what the kids are into” in order to put Johnny’s acts on the show. When Johnny’s boy band rivals like Da Pump or w-inds scored hits on the chart, Music Station would not offer them an invitation. So in the late 1990s, Fuji TV’s rival Hey Hey Hey Music Champ started to give these non-Johnny’s boy bands guest slots, and as a result, Johnny’s Jimusho completely boycotted Hey! Hey! Hey! for almost five years. When the main producer for Hey! Hey! Hey! changed around 2003, the non-Johnny’s acts were not invited back and suddenly Johnny’s Jimusho returned in full force. It’s either one or the other.

This kind of no-compromise, strong-arm financial tactics are the bread and butter of Johnny’s Jimusho’s business strategy. Any media company that does something against the wishing of Johnny’s will find themselves completely and utterly frozen out from use of product-moving Johnny’s talent. Since Johnny’s is a production office, rather than a media company, they have smartly forged financial bonds with every single record label and media conglomerate, meaning that any negative action towards Johnny’s will result in a direct loss of revenue for the offender. No one is exempt. Recently, a Kodansha gossip magazine reported on Ohno Satoshi (lead singer of Arashi) smoking marijuana (the horror!) and having a threesome in a karaoke box (the sound of little hearts breaking). Johnny’s responded immediately by forbidding all Kodansha magazines from using Johnny’s talent in any projects and retracting Kodansha annual publishing of Johnny’s Jimusho calenders, which are normally a revenue bulwark. Kodansha may suffer a decline in net sales from this action, making them wonder, in a very hostile market, whether such a story was really “worth it.”

Listening to Japanese business leaders and politicians, I know we are supposed to believe that Japan has always avoided a devilish American-style competitive capitalism motivated by profit. Everyone in Japan values “preserving social harmony at all moments.” Johnny’s Jimusho, however, is a perfect example of the corporate bullying that tends to easily dominate “harmonious” markets. Johnny’s also acts as a fierce conservative force, making sure that the industry does not change or embrace new technologies that would alter the current power balance. The relation between Johnny’s and Japan is like if your 75 year-old grandfather somehow had the power to set internet policy for Hollywood.

When you ask Japanese music insiders on what it would take for Japanese entertainment companies to change, the answer is always: “We are basically waiting for Johnny to die.” This is what strategy for industrial progress in Japan has come to: wishing the speedy demise of the king. I hope TohoShinki has the quiet patience and a few decades required to bring real change to the world of J-Pop.

seriously...
JE should re-think about their monopoly over japanese music industry...
they've got to admit that TVXQ sings better than JE's groups....
only with competition will the music industry be able to improve...
why can't they see that???!!!

i am really upset cos i used to LOVE to watch Music Station when it was aired on free-to-air tv at late nights... i stayed up late to watch them... now it feels like such a scam...

i mean look at the other asian countries...
TVXQ CDs can be found easily...
at least I can purchase any TVXQ new CD easily here in singapore now...
where Arashi or even Hideaki Takizawa CDs are like a rare find here, even in HMV....
News is slightly better that they still have some CDs lying here and there in the record stores...
only major acts like Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru have more CDs lying around...

but the weird thing is that TVXQ's japanese albums are ALSO placed in the Korean music sections here in singapore's HMV.... and other music stores...
which i find so weird....
shouldn't they be categorized according to the music genre, and not where the singers are from?
there's seriously some problem with this music categorizing system...

i love bittersweet love ballads

i love bittersweet love ballads...

that is why...

i love this song...

here's a translation of the lyrics...

남자 때문에 -
JOO (주)
Because of You - Joo

I think I'm lost all again.
I don't know how many times
I've found myself crying hard to say goodbye

Now I don't know what to think~ and do
I just turn and look around for someone to lean on
But I'm going to change~ this time this is not
what I want from my~ life

I'm not gonna just smile and cry falling hard for you
I wanna get back on my feet
I'm gonna stand out of the cold shade of your warm heartbeat
I'm not gonna just await and hate my 'you' all the time
I wanna learn to stand alone
I'm gonna smile all white and bright myself without~ you
by my side on my own

(I) know I always need someone so scared to be all alone
Just too~ harsh to face all this pain and stay sane
I know I always love and give with all my heart
to believe it lasts for~ever

But I'm going to change~ this time this is not
what I want from my~ life
I'm not gonna just smile and cry falling hard for you
I wanna get back on my feet
I'm gonna stand out of the cold shade of your warm heartbeat
I'm not gonna just await and hate my 'you' all the time
I wanna learn to stand alone
I'm gonna smile all white and bright myself without~ you
by my side on my own, ~
Smile all white and bright~

Junsu "Anyband" Samsung Anycall

Anyband

Anyband
Anyband Promo Poster
Artists: BoA, Junsu, Tablo, Jin Bora
Release Date: 2007.11.08
Language: Korean
Genre: Pop

BoA happens to be a household name for K-Pop and J-Pop fans. Although I’ve always felt that BoA’s current Japanese career isn’t particularly outstanding, I’ve always known that she had a lot of potential, drive and talent. To make matters worse her Korean career has almost been on hold since her 2005 album “Girls on Top”. Luckily for us fans, the rumors of her being part of the new Samsung AnyCall’s advertisement campaign was true, which meant new music with a Korean flavor.

Apart from BoA, three other famous artists were chosen to be the spokespersons of Anycall. BoA was decided to star alongside with Xiah Junsu of DBSK, Tablo of Epik High and Jin Bora, a young piano wonder. Apparently they were chosen to replace Lee Hyori. As well as being the new faces of Anycall, the artists were chosen to collaborate together and perform together as a pop group called “Anyband”.

Rumors started circulating in September when the filming was taking place. Filming of the promotional video and the advertisement were shot in Brazil. The focus of Samsung’s marketing scheme was on the spokespersons’ talent and their success. In November an official site was launched, announcing that the campaign would be unveiled on the 7th November and the full commercial would premiere in Korea. On the 7th, Anyband attended a press conference. Furthermore a concert is scheduled on the 27th November at the Central City, Millenium Hall in Seoul.
Offshot
BoA promoting Samsung

Considering the fact that Samsung happens to be the second biggest cell phone company, the promotional campaign still happened to be one of the most exciting ones I’ve ever seen. A lot of emphasis was put on promoting a positive image towards unity, happiness, love and music. The motto for this campaign was ‘TALK, PLAY, LOVE’ . Interestingly enough, while several people believe technology does isolate people, Samsung opted to promote the concept that technology unites people.

The promotional video featured both of the new songs and lasted over nine minutes. Moving towards sci-fiction, futuristic setting, this video had an atmosphere which reminded me of “Noir” movies. In some way, this video’s style reminded me a lot of Ayumi Hamasaki’s infamous promotional video “Endless Sorrow”. The whole plot was based on a society which forbids love, fun and communication and is focused on an efficient discipline system.

With this new concept, Samsung might be trying to symbolise a scenario which is reflected on many economically developed nations. People’s lifestyles have changed a lot in the past decades. Presently the focus happens to be on efficiency, discipline, work performance and the endless attempt to keep up with the changing market patterns, brought by globalisation. The result is that people are having less and less time for leisure. Commuting and traveling for work have led people to isolate themselves from their family and loved ones. Samsung brings forward the concept that by using their cell phones, they could communicate to their loved ones and relax from their hectic lifestyle.

All the members of Anyband were part of a rebel movement to overtake the current system and revive the concept of ‘TALK, PLAY, LOVE’. Throughout the first part of the video, the four are engaged in several illegal activities. Contrasting with the regular citizens, Anyband have a wardrobe which suggests a rebellious attitude, with an urban edge. They use their cell phones to record and later broadcast their performance of “TPL”. After the broadcast is interrupted by the disciplinary authorities, Anyband successfully manage to perform “Promise You” on top of four high buildings.

1. TPL (Talk Play Love)

TPL” reflects the whole concept behind Samsung’s marketing scheme. A lot of focus was on the motto ‘TALK, PLAY, LOVE’, which was continuously repeated throughout the track. “TPL” contains the same elements of the dance/house genre, with a repetitive composition, while retaining the quality that makes it so addictive. The track happens to have a rather consistent pattern, with a mid-tempo velocity and a semi-sterile, melancholic and hopeless tone.

The vocals happen to bring life to this song and move it through constant evolution. While at least two artists repeatedly sing the same lyrics, the vocals shift from one tone to another, with Tablo rapping and BoA’s spectacular vocals soaring dramatically. She hits the high notes so well that the atmosphere created is almost surreal. These vocal changes completely transform the tone of the song. I really enjoyed how they blended in the vocals together to create a complex arrangement. Jin Bora’s piano solo are featured twice; at the beginning of the track and while accompanying BoA’s solo. It is evident that Jin Bora has talent to sell and her piano solo brings a lot of emotion and colour within this song. I really like how they gave all of the artists a solo piece, which highlights their best musical qualities.

Rating: ★★★★½

2. Promise You

Promise You” contains a more upbeat, lively and attractive beat. With a more positive tone, the song highlights dreams, love, trust and music. Basically the song falls within the “feel good” slot. The pop-rock genre fitted perfectly with the video’s atmosphere and the strong message that was being transmitted. The chorus is particularly powerful, especially since various parts of the chorus were layered, particularly with Junsu’s and BoA’s higher notes.

Promise You” manages to showcase Anyband’s talents much more prominently. More time is allotted for each artist to perform solo. Tablo’s rapping interlude was very powerful and was mostly sung in English, suggesting a possible romance between the characters of BoA and himself. Jin Bora’s piano skills were beyond impressive and Junsu’s vocals brought warmth and hope. However BoA’s vocals were the main focus of this song. She maneuvered the rest of the vocalists, with her strong and emotional vocals, while complementing perfectly with Junsu.

Rating: ★★★★★

Conclusion

After a relatively lackluster year for the majority of Japan’s singles, “Anyband” was a very welcome surprised. I was extremely excited to see that Samsung actually released a single, as a part of their marketing campaign. Although this was only released as a complimentary part to the commercial, this single got a first class treatment, especially when considering how Koreans rarely release singles and avoid investing too much effort in them.

Overall it’s quite evident that this single involved quite a lot of effort and contains a lot of quality. The music video is more like a short dramatic movie and the plot was emotional, enticing but retained that realistic atmosphere. The whole concept behind it was quite appealing too, making me want to purchase yet another Samsung cell phone. My only gripe is the fact that this was released only in digital format, because I would have definitely purchased this single. Anyband have successfully managed to collaborate together and push forward their talents

Anyband also happen to bring about a very powerful performance, with a combination of strong vocals and stunning musical talent, leaving the listener breathless. Evidently Samsung have chosen their new spokespersons with care because the result was a huge success in Korea. Hopefully this means even more Anyband releases in the future.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★

Overview LIVE EARTH concert

LIVE EARTH concert day...

I watched the telecast on on 07/07/07 on Ch5 from 7pm till 11pm... Even though I think they showed it till 2am, cos they kept showing Sydney side and not so much of the Japan side, and most of the Sydney artists were unfamiliar faces to me...

Not that I know a lot of the Japanese artists... But at least they were more recognisable...

And I was bored... I actually fell asleep watching some of the performances which were heavy rock music... Incredible...

By the time Linkin Park came on, I was already so tired and sleepy...

I slept after I saw Rihanna...

I woke again on 08/07/07 at 6am to catch the continuation of the concert which featured the other cities, but mainly NYC and London...

Much better than the previous night's show...

But still could have been better...

but to show my support for the event...

i wore green and donned on my shrek ears...

Live Earth - The Concerts for A Climate in Crisis

THIS is the event of the year...

But how come my fave bands are not performing inside?

So disappointing...

AND...

How come Koda Kumi is inside???!!!!!

Has Ayumi Hamasaki's position as JPop Queen been taken over by her???!!!!

Not that I am a fan of either...

But it's kinda pathetic for Ayumi not to be included in such a big event...

And some of Asia artists have been conveniently forgotten...

I don't wanna say anything about Singapore since we're such a small place... But the rest of the Asia countries like Korea??? There's not only China and Japan in Asia...

They need to be more sensitive when they do such things... It is after all a global event... At least there should be one representative from each country to be fair...Though I understand people might not wanna see everyone since they don't know them...

Seriously I was shocked not to see Rain inside... Having toured before in sell-out tours in the USA before...

Though I wanted to see TVXQ more than Rain...

Shocking...

I love this song the very first time I saw it on Alwaysane's laptop...

The melody is so infectious...

And the MV so touching...

This male lead is the same guy in "Stairway to Heaven" who killed himself in a car accident so that he can donate his eyes to his step-sister...

Dunno why the poor man always has to donate his eyes on TV....

Enjoy...

in mandarin...

《傻瓜》。。。and 《Rising Sun》。。。

or "unforgettable" ... and "Rising Sun" for e korean versions...

e korean songs i can't sing cos e subtitles are ALL in korean... n i can't read korean for nuts...

i can TRY to find their song cos now i approximately can recognise their band name in korean...

i can write Jaejoongie's name in korean now...

but then its very tedious to scroll thru e list lor... very much waste of precious KTV time where you're charged for the time u spend there...

i think i shall save up to buy e "All About TVXQ" DVD set from Yesasia.com... there're most of their mvs there... with karaoke versions...

so NO ONE will have to endure me singing korean songs at KBox...

NOT that i don't sound good...

just that no one else likes them.... =< onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.maggiemarket.com/download/msn/emotion/emotion19.gif">

Hady Mirza's "You Give Me Wings" Music Video

This is so exciting, the first high definition music video that I was involved in for filming and color-grading is finally on TV!!!

Too bad it's not shown in its original high definition quality. That would have been so much more beautiful...

Please note that we didn't do the editing of the video nor the conceptualization parts. We only shoot the video tomake sure the visuals were beautiful and filmic, and color graded the edited video to make the visuals look more stunning...

BUT the studio shots were our suggestions... The original concept did not include the mesmerizing studio shots of our Singapore Idol 2006... Don't be mistaken, I still think Jonathan should have been our Singapore Idol 2006, but I do think Hady looks close to mesmerizing to me in the studio shots...

Inspired by:
Il Divo & Toni Braxton's "The Time of Our Lives" music video for World Cup 2006.

And Patrizio Buanne's "Il Mondo" Music Video

Now that you are inspired...

Some promo and publicity tidbit videos before the actual thing...

But he will ALWAYS be MY Singapore Idol 2006...

Jonathan Leong....

"You Give Me Wings"

"Should I Stay"

"If You're Gone"

"Running Away" (with Electrico & Hady Mirza)

Our Singapore Idol 2005's New MV

Here's the new MV from Singapore Idol 2005 - Taufik Batisah...

"All Because Of You" 2006

Comparing to last year's MV... It looks like a remake, like what 8 Days said, it looks like a National Day Video.... with all e family, elderly, kids, couples elements... Very patriotic indeed... And throughout the entire video Taufik is seated behind the piano, which he can't play, and he hardly seems to be pretending to play it. And isn't this song not very piano-oriented, so up-tempo, the piano is like just one of the instruments backing up the keyboards and guitars...

I dunno who did this video... cos it's not the official one from Mediacorp, that we all saw on TV...

"I Dream" 2005

Now I am SOOO looking forward to see Hady Mirza's "You Give Me Wings" MV up on TV... I think it looks much better than Taufik's... Aside from the fact that both are done with probably the same small budget, I think the difference in sets made a huge difference. But honestly, I think Hady could do with more practice in his moves, cos he does look a bit stiff in "You Give Me Wings" compared to Taufik in his "I Dream" MV...
